After the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, NOAA scientists were tasked with helping lawyers better understand the impacts of oil, so that the lawyers might estimate the cost of the environmental restoration needed (and therefore how much to request in negotiations with BP). Through the design process for this diagram, scientists were better able to articulate their knowledge and hone in on key impacts, while the final product provided lawyers with an accessible translation of the complicated science.
